This collection contains manuscripts of both published and unpublished magazine articles as well as short stories, manuscripts of large projects (both published and unpublished), diaries, a scrapbook, and personal items. The incomplete diaries cover the years of 1923 through 1943. The scrapbook contains articles regarding Avis Carlson, her published materials, and other family members. There are also some personal items in the collection. The materials are arranged chronologically and sub divided by subject matter.

Avis Dungan was born in Moline, Elk County, Kansas and grew up as part of a farm family. Her grandmother was the teacher at her school. Avis and her five siblings worked on the farm both before and after classes. Avis graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. Afterwards she taught at Kinsley School until her marriage to Harry Carlson in 1917. Mrs. Carlson also obtained a Master degree in English from the University of Illinois.
